Sleeve gastrectomy

Sleeve gastrectomy is the most commonly performed obesity surgery in France. It is a restrictive technique involving the removal of approximately two-thirds of the stomach, including the portion that produces ghrelin, the hormone that stimulates appetite.

At the PULSE Obesity Surgery Center, we use the latest minimally invasive techniques, either via "low impact" laparoscopy or single-port trocar methods (scarless sleeve surgery).

Benefits of sleeve gastrectomy

The procedure leads to a quick and long-lasting feeling of fullness, reducing the amount of solid food intake. The stomach is reshaped into a vertical tube, and food passes rapidly into the intestine. In other words, appetite decreases. Patients can lose up to 60% of their excess weight, often resulting in partial or complete resolution of obesity-related conditions.

This technique does not affect food digestion. Sleeve gastrectomy may also serve as the first step toward a biliopancreatic diversion. It is indicated for moderate to severe obesity. A key advantage of the procedure is its simplicity, especially when performed laparoscopically.

The sleeve gastrectomy procedure

As the stomach resection is permanent, sleeve gastrectomy must be carefully considered following a thorough evaluation. Thanks to extensive experience in bariatric surgery, our multidisciplinary team can support patients step-by-step throughout the entire treatment journey and postoperative follow-up.

Sleeve gastrectomy is not without risks. Gastric ulcers, gastro-peritoneal fistulas, and bleeding are known complications described in the literature, with widely varying incidence rates. Ours are among the lowest. Our experience has taught us that in the event of a complication, prompt intervention is essential to achieving optimal outcomes and minimizing risk. This is why our obesity specialists are available and provide follow-up 7 days a week.

In cases of failure or weight regain, timely and appropriate medical or surgical interventions can still effectively manage the condition — the patient is never left behind. It's also worth noting that an aesthetic surgeon works directly with our team to help address physical appearance issues, such as excess skin and other imperfections.
